Matthews, Crunch Time

After a comeback win in Tampa on Saturday night, the final roster cuts are down to the wire. The Jags play their final preseason game against the Falcons tomorrow night but dont expect the starters to play much. This last game of the preseason usually breaks the position battle and will determine who makes the final 53 for the regular season. Garrard will probably play one series on offense and then pass it on to Luke McCown and the battle will begin.

One Josh vs Jags, Prediction

For the Jags third preseason game of the season, they will not have to face Bucs starting QB Josh Freeman. Freeman, who was the Bucs QB for the first two preseason games is out with a broken hand and will not play vs Jags. That leaves the starting QB role in the hands of Bucs QB Josh Johnson. This is a big edge for the Jags defense as Johnson has not played that much and the Jags pass rush has to attack and get Johnson flustered. The Bucs offense will be trying to establish a hard running game and the Jags need to put eight players in the box to stop the running lanes and force Josh Johnson to beat them.

Dont Kick It To Karim

So far in this pre season, the most impressive play maker that has played consistently has to be KR/RB Deji Karim. Karim, the rookie out of Southern Illinois, has been a “beast” on kickoff returns averaging 32 yards per return. His longest of the season has been a 68 yard return and has been a threat to take a kickoff back for a TD every time. He has a great burst of speed through the first wave of defenders and will help the offense tremendously.

Lightning and bad defense lead to 12 pt halftime deficit

Before the Jags first pre season home game, lightning in the area delayed the game for two hours.  The defense must have been hit by one of those lightning bolts because they came out of the gates very flat footed.  The Dolphins offense lead by starting QB Chad Henne completed 11 of 15 passes for 151 yards and 2 TD’s, both to TE Anthony Fasano. The Jags secondary unfortunately gave up big plays in the passing game. One play of 55 yards to Anthony Fasano and a play of 37 yards to Brandon Marshall.  Ronnie Brown also had another receiving TD with 2 receptions for 19 yards.

Backup QB McCown shines in 1 pt loss

David Garrard did not have a great game in the Jags first preseason game against the Eagles. He was 5 0f 10 for only 35. Most of his completions were underneath routes to TE Marcedes Leis and one catch by Mike Sims-Walker. For the next game against the Dolphins, Coach Del Rio needs to open up the first team offense more. But there was a great game played by another Jags QB. Backup QB Luke McCown played very well in the Jags 1st game of the season. Even though the Jags lost by one point, McCown threw for 3 TD’s and 244 yards including a 76 yard play action pass TD to WR Troy Williamson. Now he was playing against the Eagles 2nd team secondary and units, but his passes were on the money including another 30 yard to R John Matthews. David Garrard is the starting QB but McCown made a great statement for more reps in practice with the 1st team. Garrard seemed a little rusty with short passes and some drops by WR but McCown seemed more comfortable moving the pocket. Hopefully the passing game will continue to improve for the next preseason game next Saturday against the Miami Dolphins.

The 2010-11 season starts off tonight at 7:30 in Philadelphia and the team needs to be ready. They will be facing a good one-two QB combination in Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick. The Jags DL has to step up early and get pressure on the QB which they were unable to do during the year. Opposing QB’s were able to throw for 3774 yards and 7.6 yards per completion.

3 days and counting

The 2010 Jags begin their quest for an AFC South title in Philadelphia on Friday against Andy Reid’s Eagles. Now the team will have to go without 3rd rounder D’Anthony Smith who hurt his Achilles and will be out for the season. Look for the Jags defensive line to improve from last years abysmal attempt at sacking an opposing QB with only 14 sacks last year. Ths off season the team revamped its LB corp thru the draft and off season trades and recently just resigned former Jags LB Tony Gilbert to anchor the line

TO would have looked good in Teal

Terrell Owens who is probably going to join OchoStinko and the Cincy Bengals would have looked good for the Jags in Teal. The Jags offseason would have changed dramatically and so would fans reaction to upcoming season.

Scouting the Division starting with Texans

The AFC South is a very tough division for the Jags to play in. The Jags defense will have to improve drastically to battle the leagues best passing offense. Now that offense is not in Indianopolis with Peyton Manning but the Houston Texans as starting QB Matt Schaub
