Jags D bends but doesnt break in Win

December 6th, 2009 | by Nate Bruce |

Jags Defense played well enough to win and get to two games above .500 (7-5) in the home win against the Texans. They made big plays in the red zone and held the Texans offense to 4 FG’s and also forced 3 Int. Gerald Alexander intercepted a halfback pass attempt by Chris Brown as the Texans were driving and made the play on the 2 yard line. Earlier in the game, Matt Schaub was injured on a sack and hurt his shoulder and left the game but Rex Grossman came in at QB and still could not make anything happen.

Maurice Jones-Drew refused to give the Texans back the ball late in the 4th quarter. With 4:00 left in the game and the Texans having all three timeouts, Mojo had to pound the ball and advance the chains. He ran for big plays out of the inside draw and kept the clock moving. Statistically he did not have a big game as the Texans were set on shutting him down holding him to 24 carries for 76 yards. But the big 4th quarter runs showed his toughness and heart to fight and finish the job the defense did.

One issue that the Jags offense has to work on is staying on their feet. On the same play, both Maurice Jones-Drew and David Garrard slipped on the wet turf in the endzone and cost the team the safety. Im not sure if the team has special cleats because it rains a lot especially during these months but slipping is sad. Garrard did it multiple times and he definetely needs these shoes because he is putting the offense in bad position. As an experienced player, you cant make those basic mistakes and expect to keep moving the offense ddown on the field.
